Deleting files or formatting a drive is not the same as destroying the storage
When a hard drive, SSD, or other storage device is being retired, the important question is whether the information on that device should remain recoverable. If the answer is no, tell us the data is the priority before the equipment enters the recycling path.
- Hard drives and solid-state drives can be identified for destruction instead of ordinary reuse or recycling.
- Equipment containing customer data remains under AME's control while it is in our custody.
- A Certificate of Destruction is available upon request when documentation is required.
- Business customers can contact us in advance about multiple systems, drives, or documentation needs.
Retire old technology without putting it in ordinary trash
Old computers contain metals, circuit boards, batteries, storage devices, and other materials that should be handled differently from household waste. Recycling creates a cleaner end-of-life path while data destruction handles the separate privacy problem.
If a device might still contain files, accounts, customer information, tax records, photos, business documents, or other private material, let us know at drop-off so the storage media can be handled appropriately.

Before you bring equipment in
A few simple steps make recycling and destruction easier
If you are unsure whether the data should be preserved, recovered, or destroyed, tell us before the device is processed.
- 01Back up anything you want to keep
Copy important files before recycling equipment unless data recovery is the reason you are bringing it in.
- 02Tell us which devices contain sensitive data
Identify drives or computers that need destruction documentation rather than ordinary recycling handling.
- 03Remove personal accessories
Take out unrelated personal items, removable media you intend to keep, and accessories that are not part of the recycling request.
- 04Ask for a certificate when you need one
If documentation matters for your records, request a Certificate of Destruction when arranging the service.

Yes. A Certificate of Destruction is available upon request for applicable destruction work. Ask for the certificate when arranging the service so the documentation requirement is clear from the beginning.
Are computers and drives ever left unattended?
Equipment containing customer data is not left unattended while it is in AME Computers' custody. We keep data-bearing equipment under our control through the applicable recycling or destruction handling process.
Should I delete or format my drive before bringing it in?
You may remove files you no longer need, but deletion and formatting should not be treated as a substitute for secure destruction when the goal is to make the storage unusable and the data unrecoverable through normal use.
Can a business bring multiple computers or hard drives?
Yes, but call ahead for larger batches. That gives us a chance to discuss quantities, which devices contain storage media, and whether destruction documentation is required.
What if I need files recovered before the drive is destroyed?
Tell us before destruction or recycling. Once a drive is physically destroyed, recovery is no longer the objective. If the files matter, start with a data-recovery evaluation first.
Do you accept every type of electronic device?
No recycling program should assume every item fits the same process. Contact AME Computers before bringing unusually large, specialized, hazardous, or high-volume equipment so we can confirm whether it is appropriate for this service.
