How to Use the Disk Fragmentation Utility

The disk defragmentation utility that come with windows XP and windows 2000 is a very essential tool that can help analyze and defrag your hard drive, to help keep  your computer running at it's tops performance level. Running the disk defragmentation on a hard drive the utility will display a chart that will show the amount of disk space that is being used before the defragmentation and then will also display in a dialoged box a recommendation of whether or not you should defragment your hard drive. Depending on how new your computer is or how old your hard drive is you many not have a lot of files that have have been fragmented.

This also depends on how much use your hard drive has had as far as installing and uninstalling files, moving or deleting files. If that is the case it is possible that your files are stored in contiguous clusters, meaning your hard drive is performing at a optimal level.

However if your are like most users and have moved files installed or uninstalled files your  hard drive may need to be defragmented, therefore it is recommended that you do, it can significantly improve your  hard rive performance.

It is recommended that your analyze and defrag your hard drive if it needs it at least once a month to enhance your hard drive performance.
